France Surf Camps — Atlantic Regions, Seasons and Arrival Planning
France’s Atlantic surf camps are concentrated along the long sandy Côte d’Argent and Basque coastline, not in a single interchangeable town. A Gironde glamping camp, a Biscarrosse surf house, a Seignosse villa and a Hossegor junior academy can share the same country label while needing different airports, trains and coaching formats.
This guide covers verified south-west France stays across the completed France directory review. It does not invent prices, street pins beyond operator-published addresses, or safety guarantees.

Choose a stretch of coast
Northern Gironde: Soulac and Le Pin Sec
Dreamsea’s 2026 France base is Soulac-sur-Mer, with tent accommodation and separately bookable surf courses. Planet’s Le Pin Sec camp sits farther south near Naujac-sur-Mer in a quieter glamping setting close to the dunes. Bordeaux is the practical airport for both. These bases suit travellers who want sandy beach breaks without assuming they are next door to Hossegor nightlife.
Biscarrosse Plage
La Boga is a small surf house on Avenue de la Plage. Packages bundle nights and lessons; meals are optional. The local tourist office points to Bordeaux as the primary airport, with rail via Ychoux and buses onward. Ask the house for current transfer help rather than assuming a free shuttle.
Seignosse, Vieux-Boucau and Hossegor
Maranga’s villa sits near Seignosse Le Penon within walking distance of beach and shops. Planet Vieux-Boucau occupies Camping Les Sablères behind the dunes, with Hossegor about twenty minutes away by vehicle. Blackwave’s Academy Junior week uses a supervised Hossegor house for ages 11–18. Biarritz Airport is often the closer flight for this southern Landes cluster; Bordeaux remains an alternative with a longer transfer.
Hossegor town information identifies BIQ at roughly 40–45 minutes by car and names Dax/Bayonne rail plus local bus lines. Famous Hossegor peaks can be powerful; beginners should stay with their camp’s chosen teaching beach.
Bias, Saint-Girons and the southern Landes
Surflife Family uses Camping Le Tatiou in Bias, with furnished family tents and optional lessons and meals. L’Especier beach needs a journey from camp; use Labouheyre rail and onward transport only after checking current timetables. Saint Girons Surf House is a much smaller dune-side house offering seven-night retreat packages with breakfasts and five coached days. Roofless adds a flexible lodge-and-optional-lessons choice in Hossegor. Secret Spot Lodge is inland from Messanges/Moliets and recommends a car; its published child age thresholds conflict, so families need written acceptance.
Biarritz and Saint-Jean-de-Luz
Surfcamp Biarritz is the Alfred Hotels / Jo Moraiz partnership, with breakfast and lessons in an eligible hotel surf stay. Confirm property, building and lesson count; a standard room-only reservation is different. Hegoa, the operator behind Surf, Chill & Stay, offers canvas-tent stays and surf options at Mayarco outside Saint-Jean-de-Luz centre. Biarritz (BIQ) is a useful regional air gateway; onward hotel or campsite transport must be arranged, not assumed included.
When to go
Many of these camps open for the European summer. Dreamsea lists mid-May to late September 2026; Planet’s France pages show June–September/October windows that differ by camp. Maranga and La Boga describe broader seasonal rhythms, with quieter winters at the house stays.
Operator and regional guidance generally treat summer as the main learning window, with warmer air and busier beaches, while early autumn can bring stronger Atlantic swell. That does not mean every September day is advanced-only or every July day is gentle. Ask your coach about your dates and ability. Water remains cool enough that many visitors still use a wetsuit even in summer—confirm hire inclusions.
Airports and arrival options
Bordeaux (BOD)
Best default for Soulac, Le Pin Sec and Biscarrosse. Dreamsea offers shared Saturday BOD transfers if pre-booked. Planet Le Pin Sec points to rail toward Lesparre plus a requested station shuttle. Biscarrosse tourism quotes about fifty minutes by car from BOD.
Biarritz (BIQ)
Often practical for Seignosse, Vieux-Boucau and Hossegor. Hossegor’s destination site cites roughly 40 km / about 45 minutes by car. Planet Vieux-Boucau uses a third-party Saturday shuttle network that also serves Bordeaux and Dax—book that provider directly.
Trains and buses
Useful rail heads include Bordeaux, Dax, Bayonne, Lesparre and Ychoux. Maranga cites bus line 517 toward Seignosse Le Penon. Biscarrosse tourism describes XLR buses from Ychoux. Always re-check live timetables; evening and Sunday services can be limited.
No transfer duration, fare or connection is guaranteed here. Build buffer for delayed flights, board bags and summer traffic.
Baïnes, flags and insurance
Nouvelle-Aquitaine’s coastal observatory warns that baïnes (rip-current channels) are common on sandy beaches and can pull swimmers offshore quickly, especially between mid-tide and low tide. Calm-looking pools inside sandbars are often the danger zone. Swim between the supervised flags when beaches are patrolled, do not fight a rip, and call for help while floating with the current until you can exit sideways.
Surf lessons do not make unsupervised swimming safe. Arrange travel insurance that explicitly covers surfing and local medical care.
What to compare before booking
- Adult camp versus junior academy age limits and escort rules.
- Lesson units and length (Planet uses 45-minute units; other houses use 1h30 or 2h blocks).
- Whether meals are included or optional.
- Tent/glamping versus private house rooms and shared bathrooms.
- Whether airport/station transfers are included, optional or third-party.
- Exact 2026 location—Dreamsea France is Soulac, not the older Moliets directory pin.
Practical traveler FAQs
Which airport should I book?
Match the camp: BOD for northern Gironde/Biscarrosse; BIQ often better for Seignosse–Hossegor. Confirm the transfer plan before buying non-refundable fares.
Are transfers included?
Usually not by default. Dreamsea and some Planet/third-party shuttles are optional paid services. Junior Academy Lourdes pickup applies only to recommended group flights.
Is Hossegor suitable for beginners every day?
Not necessarily. Camps relocate or choose softer beaches when swell is large. Follow instructors and beach flags.
Do I need a wetsuit?
Often yes, even in summer. Confirm whether hire is included for your package and level.
Can I arrive mid-week?
Some houses allow flexible arrivals; many weekly camps use Saturday changeovers. Check the specific product.
