This is the gear we’d tell a friend to buy when they’re starting out. No fluff, no “top 50” list. You don’t need all of it. Start with a foam board, a leash, wax, sunscreen and, if your water is cool, a 3/2 wetsuit. Everything else can wait until you’re hooked (you will be).

Beginner Foam Boards
Learn on foam. A soft-top is forgiving when it hits you, floats you into waves early, and survives car parks and sandbars. For most adults, 8ft is the sweet spot; go bigger if you're heavier or older, and don't be in a hurry to downsize.
Wavestorm Classic 8ft Soft Top Surfboard
The board half the lineup learned on. Best for: first-timers and families who want one board everyone can share. Look for: it comes with fins and a leash; it's heavy-ish and not built for performance, which is exactly the point.

A step up in finish from the entry-level foamies. Best for: beginners who want a board that lasts a few seasons. Look for: pick the 8ft unless you're light or a kid.
Check price on AmazonWetsuits
A 3/2mm full suit (3mm torso, 2mm limbs) covers the widest range of water, roughly the low 60s to around 70°F. Fit matters more than brand: snug everywhere with no water pockets in the lower back or armpits. Try on, and return if it's baggy.
O'Neill Men's Reactor-2 3/2mm Back Zip Full Wetsuit
Best for: beginners who surf a few times a month and want a reliable, easy-to-get-into suit. Look for: back zip is easiest to put on; choose your size from O'Neill's height/weight chart on the listing.

A little stretchier and warmer than the Reactor. Best for: surfers getting in the water regularly through spring and fall.

Best for: regular surfers who want more stretch for paddling. Same fit advice: snug, no gaps.
Check price on AmazonLeashes
Rule of thumb: leash about as long as your board (a 9ft leash for a longboard or 8ft foamie, 6ft for a shortboard). Thicker cords are stronger but drag more; beginners should err on strong.
FCS Regular Classic Surfboard Leash (7mm)
Best for: everyday surfing on most boards. Look for: swivels at both ends to stop tangling; choose length to match your board.
Check price on AmazonFCS 9' All Round Calf Essential Leash
A calf-strap leash for longboards and big foamies; keeps the cord away from your feet when you walk the board.
Check price on AmazonSurf Wax
Wax is matched to water temperature: too soft and it melts into a mess, too hard and you slip. Use a base coat and then a temperature-appropriate top coat, and comb it rough before each session.
Mr. Zog's Original Sex Wax – Cool Water
Best for: roughly 58–68°F water, most of California and similar. The classic, coconut-scented.
Check price on AmazonMr. Zog's Original Sex Wax – Tropical Water
Best for: warm water trips: Bali, Costa Rica, Hawaii. Using cold wax in the tropics is a slippery mistake.
Check price on AmazonPickle Wax Remover with Sticky Bumps Comb Kit
Best for: anyone. Comb the wax to restore grip, and strip old dirty wax before a fresh coat.
Check price on AmazonFins
Most boards use FCS II or Futures boxes; check yours before buying, they aren't interchangeable. Soft-top boards usually come with fins, so this is for your next board.
FCS II Carver Neo Glass Eco Tri Fin Set
Best for: beginner-to-intermediate surfers on FCS II boards who want smooth, predictable turns. Look for: size by body weight using FCS's chart on the listing.
Check price on AmazonBoard Bags & Soft Racks
A day bag protects against dings and sun on the way to the beach. Soft racks let you carry a board on a car with no roof bars; strap tight, go slow, and check them before freeway speeds.
Ho Stevie! Zippered Surfboard Day Bag
Best for: protecting a new board from dings and UV. Look for: order a bag a few inches longer than your board.

Best for: cars without roof bars and surfers carrying 1–3 boards locally. Doors close over the straps; no installation.
Check price on AmazonPro-Lite Double Row Soft Roof Rack
Best for: carrying several boards, or families. Bigger and sturdier than single-pad racks.
Check price on AmazonReef-Safe Sunscreen
You'll be on reflective water for hours. Look for mineral (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) formulas without oxybenzone and octinoxate. Hawaii bans those two, and they're linked to reef damage. Reapply after every session.
Blue Lizard Sensitive Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50
Best for: sensitive skin and long sessions. Zinc-based and water resistant.
Check price on AmazonBadger Reef Safe Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50
Best for: anyone who wants a simple, clean-ingredient zinc sunscreen. Thick, so rub in well.
Check price on AmazonChanging Ponchos
Changing in a car park with a towel that keeps slipping gets old fast. A hooded poncho lets you change anywhere and keeps you warm afterward.
Ho Stevie! Surf Changing Poncho
Best for: a warm, soft, affordable first poncho.
Check price on AmazonNomadix Changing Poncho
Best for: travel. Lighter, quick-drying, and packs smaller than thick terry ponchos.
Check price on AmazonSurf Watches
Nice to have, not essential. A tide watch helps you learn how your local break changes through the tide, which is one of the fastest ways to start catching more waves.
Casio Tide Graph Moon Phase Watch
Best for: budget-minded surfers who want a tide graph that's waterproof enough for surfing. Set it to your home break.

Best for: surfers who want preloaded tide data for hundreds of breaks worldwide.
Check price on AmazonEar Plugs
Repeated cold wind and water can cause surfer's ear (exostosis), bony growths in the ear canal. Plugs that let sound in are a cheap way to protect yourself, especially in cold water.
Surf Ears 4.0 Ear Plugs
Best for: regular and cold-water surfers. Built for surfing, block water but let you hear the lineup.
