Verdad Nicaragua & Sand Bar — Seven-Night Surf School Stay

Verdad’s hillside base near Playa Escameca combines hotel accommodation with Sand Bar Surf School coaching. The current direct seven-night offer prices the surf programme plus accommodation, so request a complete stay-and-surf quote rather than treating the surf add-on as the whole holiday price.

Coaching is not unguided beach access

The hotel’s current surf-school page identifies locally owned Sand Bar as the exclusive coaching partner and states coaches are certified instructors with ISA/ILA water-rescue certification. It describes an ability assessment, individualized morning goal-setting/check-ins, land and water basics for beginners, and technique work for progressing surfers. The published maximum 1:2 coach-to-student ratio is a coaching claim, not a promise of private one-to-one for the whole week or of a fixed clock-time daily itinerary.

Sand Bar’s own packages page corroborates tide-led sessions, theory, filming, video analysis, board provision, 4×4 break transport, mobility class and recovery ice bath, and the 7 nights / 6 surfing days format. That is six surfing days inside a seven-night stay — not eight teaching days borrowed from the old page title. Optional SurfSkate, massage, guided yoga and excursions are listed by Sand Bar as extras, not package entitlements.

Do not treat “coaching partner on the beach” as continuous in-water supervision, a rescue vessel guarantee or a numeric ratio for every optional free-surf hour. Ask how arrival and departure days are scheduled, whether every surfing day is a coached water session, and how mixed abilities are split when the 1:2 maximum applies.

Rooms, bathrooms, privacy and hillside access — do not invent an allocation

Verdad’s casitas inventory describes ocean-view casitas with en-suite bathrooms, outdoor showers and solar hot-water rain showers; a double casita; a duplex; and two poolside rooms with private bathrooms. Hillside pathways link accommodations to the yoga/fitness studio, pool and lounge. Most casitas rely on design + ceiling fans; the hotel FAQ states the two poolside rooms have fans and air-conditioning.

Source limit: the surf package is an add-on priced plus accommodation. No current package text assigns a specific casita, duplex, or pool room, bed layout, sole occupancy or roommate match. Do not infer that every guest receives an ocean-view outdoor shower or AC from the generic inventory. Confirm the actual room name, privacy (sole vs shared occupancy of that room’s bathroom), fan/AC, deck access and any extra-person fee ($25 pp beyond double occupancy appears on the hotel FAQ) on the written confirmation.

Ask about hillside mobility — paths, steps and distance to beach/restaurant — if that matters. No measured step-free route or accessibility certification is established here. Wi-Fi is described as free but can be inconsistent; the property is solar-powered with occasional short outages per the FAQ.

Choosing a season for southern Nicaragua skill and break tradeoffs

Escameca and nearby Yankee are selected by conditions; ability assessment comes first. Southern Pacific patterns (hotel FAQ + independent San Juan del Sur season writing) roughly separate:

  • Mid-November through April (drier / high season): more temperate days, fewer heavy rains, generally mellower surf — often preferred by beginners, with more visitor traffic and earlier booking pressure around holidays.
  • May through October (green / swell season): larger south swells and lusher conditions; late September–October can bring heavier rain and bigger surf — a tradeoff for progressing/intermediate riders, not a beginner guarantee.
  • Water feel: hotel FAQ notes warmer water roughly May–December and cooler Humboldt influence roughly January–March — advice, not a wetsuit inclusion.

None of this is a forecast, a daily-surf promise or proof that Escameca is gentle on your dates. Ask the coach about your month and swimming/surfing ability. Pacific currents and undertows can be strong; follow the day’s assessment and do not treat unsupervised beach time as coached.

Meals, diet, gear and what is not included

Package meals listed by the hotel and Sand Bar: pre-breakfast, full breakfast and dinner, plus fresh fruit, Nicaraguan coffee, purified water and juice. Lunch is extra unless your quote explicitly folds it in; the beach bar is a separate budget line. Massage and guided yoga are extras on Sand Bar’s current page — this guide does not restore the old third-party Paradise package’s included-massage wording.

Boards “to suit your needs” are listed in the package; confirm sizing, independent-use limits outside coached sessions and damage responsibility before paying. Pool, honor bar, fitness and yoga-studio access appears in the package list — that is facility access, not a daily yoga class entitlement. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, appropriate footwear for hillside paths and any personal medications; shampoo/soap are provided per FAQ but favorites are guest-supplied.

Dietary needs are not an allergy-safe kitchen guarantee. State requirements early and ask how breakfast/dinner are adapted. No weekly price from marketing pages is locked here — request a dated, tax-inclusive quote (rooms carry a stated 15% tax on the hotel FAQ).

MGA / LIR arrival and booking terms

  1. Confirm Verdad + Sand Bar surf add-on, seven nights, six surfing days, room category and occupancy before buying non-refundable flights. No flights are included.
  2. Gateways named by the hotel: MGA (Managua, Nicaragua) or LIR (Liberia, Costa Rica). Both are described as roughly 2.5-hour drives — estimates, not guaranteed connections. LIR requires a land-border crossing; hotel FAQ notes border time from about 10 minutes to well over an hour. Confirm both-country entry rules, fees, driver handoff, baggage/board bags and delay plans. SJO is not treated as the same arranged product.
  3. Transfers are an additional charge. Send flight numbers, dates, party size and board-bag needs; ask who meets you, how delays are monitored and whether separate arrivals cost extra.
  4. Check-in 3pm / check-out 11am (luggage storage described). Early beach/restaurant use if the room is not ready is hospitality language, not a guaranteed early key.
  5. Cancellation (hotel FAQ / reserve): cancellation 180 days or more before arrival → full refund; inside 180 days → no refund. Reservation changes are discretionary and still follow that refund rule. Reserve page restates no refunds within 180 days of arrival. Full room payment is required on booking per FAQ. Mid-stay interruption, no-show and surf-day weather credits are not separately documented here — get them in writing if material. Travel insurance that covers surfing and medical care remains the traveller’s responsibility.

Who it suits

Travellers who want small-group, assessed coaching at a hillside boutique hotel away from central San Juan del Sur, and who will book room and surf programme together with eyes open on the 180-day cancellation window. Less suited if you need a named accessible room, AC in every casita, included lunch/massage or a marketplace package that still promises the old Paradise inclusions.

Practical traveler FAQs

Is the surf package price also my room price?

No. The hotel’s current surf-school page states that the surf package is an add-on plus accommodation. Request a full quote for your chosen room, guests, nights, surf programme, taxes and extras.

How many days of surfing come with seven nights?

Sand Bar’s current package page describes seven nights with six surfing days. Confirm the actual arrival/departure schedule and session plan; do not assume the old eight-day title means eight lessons.

What coach-to-student ratio does Verdad publish?

The hotel surf-school page states a maximum of two students per surf coach, with individualized morning goal-setting. That is the published maximum for the Sand Bar programme, not a guarantee of private one-to-one all week or of continuous supervision outside coached sessions. Confirm how mixed levels are split on your dates.

Which room and bathroom do I get with the surf add-on?

None is assigned by the package text. Verdad’s inventory describes casitas and poolside rooms with en-suite bathrooms and solar hot water, mostly fans, with AC on the two poolside rooms — but you must confirm the actual booked unit, occupancy privacy and hillside access on your confirmation. Do not assume ocean-view outdoor showers or AC from the generic list.

Are a massage and daily video analysis included?

The current hotel page lists three to four video-analysis sessions. Sand Bar places massage among extras. This page does not carry over the old booking offer’s massage or every-evening analysis promise.

Is lunch included?

No. Current hotel and Sand Bar package lists cover pre-breakfast, full breakfast and dinner, plus fruit, coffee, purified water and juice. Budget separately for lunch and honor-bar purchases unless your written quote says otherwise.

Is Liberia airport in Nicaragua?

No. LIR is in Costa Rica. A transfer to Verdad crosses a land border and must be coordinated around the relevant immigration requirements and operating hours. MGA is the Nicaragua arrival option.

What is the hotel cancellation rule?

Hotel FAQ and reserve pages: cancellations received 180 days or more before arrival receive a full refund; cancellations inside that window are not refunded. Changes are discretionary and follow the same refund rules. Full room payment is required on booking. Confirm the exact wording on your reservation channel before paying.

What if my flight is late or I arrive separately from my group?

Send the flight number, arrival date and party size before paying. Ask who meets you, how flight delays are monitored, and whether a separate pickup costs extra. An arranged transfer does not automatically cover several flights or unlimited waiting.

Is surfing or swimming guaranteed to be safe?

No. Pacific currents and undertows can be strong, and conditions change by season and day. Follow the instructor’s daily assessment, avoid surfing alone, and arrange insurance that explicitly covers surfing and appropriate medical care. Nearby Yankee or a larger swell day is not automatically a beginner lesson spot.

What will the final price include?

Request a dated, tax-inclusive quote showing room occupancy, surf add-on, meals, boards, airport legs and optional activities. Marketing package figures are not locked here; rooms carry a stated 15% tax on the hotel FAQ. Rates vary by date and channel.
