Urcia Surf School – Surf Camps in Huanchaco, Peru
Urcia is a family-run surf school and surf house in Huanchaco, northern Peru, led by Juninho Urcia and his family. Its short camps combine shared accommodation, beginner/intermediate group lessons, board and wetsuit rental, and one caballito de totora cultural tour. The month-long Surf & Spanish product is a different contract, not simply daily lessons for a month.
The important practical distinction is surf house versus surf school. The operator describes a walk between them and labels them separately on its website. Previously conflicting street-address references have not been independently reconciled, so no street address is reproduced here. Obtain the current lodging check-in point and separate lesson meeting point in your confirmation.
The booking button goes directly to Urcia’s own packages page; it is not a tracked marketplace affiliate link.

Location and getting from your room to the right lesson
The Surf House page describes the house as less than 200 metres from the beach, opposite the La Curvita break, and about ten minutes on foot through town from the school. These are operator estimates, not a measured route from every room, a beachfront-room promise or evidence that lessons always meet at your accommodation.
The current primary pages distinguish the school and the house. That helps explain why two address labels appear, but it is not an independent confirmation of the correct present-day check-in destination. This guide deliberately omits both street addresses. Ask whether to go first to the surf house or school, who receives you, how late arrival works and where to take luggage. Do not send a driver to a generic Urcia search result without checking which property it represents.
Huanchaco town access is useful for self-catering and meals between lessons. A beach across the road does not eliminate the need to agree where to collect your board, meet the instructor or enter the water. The school says it uses different breaks according to conditions and participants’ level; a room near La Curvita is not a fixed entitlement to lessons there.
Waves and seasons: more specific than suitable for everyone
Urcia’s spot guide describes several distinct Huanchaco breaks, not one uniform sand-bottom teaching beach. La Curvita can suit learners and improvers, but the same page warns about stones at low tide, heavier shorebreak in some sections and a current that strengthens with swell. It describes El Elio as a longer left over rocky ground, with a south-to-north current; La Punta near the pier is an advanced option where exit judgement matters.
Those details are more important than the website’s broad all-levels marketing. Ask the instructor which section, tide and entry/exit suits you today. Do not interpret a named beginner spot as safe to enter alone, and do not copy the operator’s universal consistency percentages or maximum wave-length claims into your expectations.
The operator describes surfing throughout the year, with June–September generally bringing the biggest swell and warmer daytime weather December–April. That creates a tradeoff: a learner is not automatically better served by the largest-swell period, and a more experienced surfer still needs the right conditions and equipment. Exact conditions, wind and current vary; ask about the programme for your dates rather than expecting every day to resemble a promotional photo.
Urcia advertises separately arranged Chicama trips when conditions fit, with transport and boat assistance described for that trip. Chicama is not the accommodation base and no standard six-/eleven-day camp inclusion list promises a free Chicama outing or boat service. Get its price, ability requirements, weather cancellation and equipment/transport scope separately; do not assume a famous long left is automatically appropriate for your first surf.
Group tuition, private lessons and advanced coaching
The school page describes beginner-to-intermediate lessons lasting one and a half hours, with a maximum three participants per instructor. The exact six- and eleven-day camp forms repeat the lesson duration and number. Tell the team whether you are starting from scratch, riding whitewater, catching green waves or turning; ask how different abilities are grouped and which language your instructor uses.
Private lessons and experienced-surfer coaching are distinct options. The operator names Juninho or Randu for technical coaching on specific skills and manoeuvres, with video analysis optionally added. The standard shared-room camp’s beginner/intermediate group lessons should not be sold as private professional coaching merely because the school also serves experienced competitors. Agree the upgrade, coach allocation, goals and filming before paying.
The exact duration matters. Five lessons over a six-day stay and eight over eleven days are not two lessons every day. The month product has ten surf lessons in thirty nights, not thirty daily lessons, plus its specific Spanish/video elements. Arrival/departure availability, rest days, poor conditions, missed sessions and rescheduling need the written plan; no fixed clock timetable or progress guarantee is published in these sources.
Three contracts, not one interchangeable camp
The six-day booking page includes five nights in a shared room, five group lessons, six days of board/wetsuit rental and one caballito tour. Breakfast, private room, video analysis, Spanish, yoga, massage and taxi pickup appear as selectable extras. Choosing an extra on a form is not proof it is already in the base price.
The eleven-day booking page lists ten nights, eight lessons, eleven rental days and one tour. Its optional breakfast/Spanish/yoga bundles have different quantities from the short product. Ask for your total itemised quote rather than transferring a six-day add-on count to this stay.
The month Surf & Spanish page specifically includes thirty nights, ten 90-minute group lessons, one month of equipment, ten one-hour Spanish lessons, one video analysis and one caballito tour. Short-camp video or Spanish extras are therefore not universal exclusions across all products. Conversely, a month with equipment is not unlimited coached water time. A custom trip needs its own nights, lessons and add-ons listed.
Rooms, bathrooms and living at the house
The house offers private and shared rooms, and describes shared rooms with a bunk bed. The packages default to shared lodging; private single/double options are separately listed. Confirm the specific bed, occupancy and any private-room supplement rather than deducing total house capacity or a guaranteed two-person dorm from one description.
Shared bathrooms with hot showers are advertised. A private bedroom does not establish an ensuite bathroom; ask exactly who shares the facilities. A/C, privacy curtains, individual lockers, accessibility, towels, linen changes, quiet hours and check-in/out are not reliably established in the reviewed room text. If one is essential, make it a booking condition, not an assumption from a photo.
Useful confirmed facilities include a communal equipped kitchen, a large social balcony, Wi-Fi, a place to rinse/dry wetsuits and a boardroom. A boardroom is practical storage, not a published insurance or individual locking guarantee. Ask about secure valuables storage and after-hours access separately.
For solo travellers, sharing a small house and balcony can provide contact with other surfers; operator-hosted testimonials describe a family atmosphere. These are impressions, not a promised guest mix, hosted evening programme, women-only dorm or safety guarantee. The room type and bathroom-sharing arrangement matter more than the general word family. No child-admission policy is established by a testimonial.
Meals, water, equipment and spending outside the package
The house says purified drinking water and tea are included and breakfast can be added. The short-camp forms explicitly sell breakfast as an extra. The described breakfast contains coffee/tea, yogurt, cereals, fruit, bread, cheese, ham and eggs; the operator invites vegetarian, vegan and allergy requests. That is evidence of willingness to discuss a diet, not a guarantee against cross-contact or a fixed menu for every day.
No standard full-board plan or daily lunch/dinner entitlement is established. Self-cater in the shared kitchen or budget for town meals. The caballito activity descriptions mention fishing and ceviche, but the site also sells different basic/cultural/adventure variants. Ask which variant your included tour covers before counting on a fish lunch, fishing opportunity or a half-day schedule. No catch or dietary substitution is guaranteed.
Board and wetsuit rental days are explicit in each camp. The school describes longboards, funboards and shortboards, with instructor help selecting a suitable board and the possibility of changing it as you improve. Confirm your size, suit fit, stock, boots and rental collection/return arrangements. We do not invent a wetsuit thickness, damage waiver, deposit or permission to take equipment on an independently arranged trip. Discuss unsupervised use and damage/loss rules before heading out alone.
A realistic day and worthwhile non-surf time
Urcia publishes package counts, not a fixed daily agenda. On a lesson day, the practical sequence is agreeing the meeting point and conditions, collecting suitable equipment and taking your 90-minute group session; breakfast can be self-catered or an agreed extra. Rest, town meals and independent time fit around the actual surf arrangement. This is planning guidance, not a claim that every guest gets a sunrise lesson and another afternoon lesson.
Spanish tuition is taught in small groups with a level assessment, practice and homework according to the operator; the month includes ten one-hour lessons, while shorter camps add it separately. Yoga and massage are optional services, not compulsory daily inclusions. The caballito tour introduces the family’s reed-boat tradition; agree the included version and timing with the team.
Urcia’s 2023 town article suggests the pier, markets and regional archaeological sites such as Chan Chan and Huacas del Sol y la Luna. The airport operator independently identifies these regional attractions too. These are ideas for time off, not evidence of included entry, current opening hours, a guided excursion or free transport. Arrange travel and tickets separately around actual lesson times.
Arrival: TRU, a confirmed destination and a separate pickup agreement
The airport operator ADP places Trujillo’s airport in Huanchaco; Urcia’s arrival article identifies Capitán FAP Carlos Martínez de Pinillos as the closest airport. TRU is the relevant local flight destination. If routing internationally through Lima, check the actual onward flight or long-distance bus connection and baggage allowances; no connection time or operating service is guaranteed here.
- Confirm room, nights, dates, lesson level and add-ons. Request the current house check-in point separately from the school. Street references remain withheld pending independent reconciliation.
- Ask whether Urcia can arrange your particular TRU pickup. The short-camp form offers taxi pickup but does not fully specify origin, hours or service conditions. It is an optional service to agree, not a free or automatically booked airport transfer.
- Send flight number, arrival time, people and board-bag dimensions. Get the price basis, vehicle size, pickup point, driver recognition, contact, waiting/delay treatment and late-room access in writing. Do not assume a name sign, flight tracking or a fixed free waiting period.
- Save the instructions offline. After baggage collection, use the agreed arrangement and contact the provider if you cannot identify it. ADP lists an airport transport provider if arranging transport independently; confirm your destination and fare before travel.
- For a bus arrival, identify the actual Trujillo terminal and arrange the onward leg with luggage. Urcia’s older article mentions city buses/colectivos, but this guide does not treat its 2023 routes or broad city travel estimate as a current airport-to-house guarantee.
- Agree return transport separately and allow the buffer required for your flight/bus and check-in. No Huaraz, Lima-airport or other intercity pickup is assumed included.
Booking, deposit and cancellation
All three exact booking pages explain: submit an inquiry, receive a reservation if available, pay a 30% deposit, then the remaining 70% on arrival. The booking is confirmed only once the deposit is received. We did not submit a form, reserve a room or verify date availability.
Those pages also state no refunds are given. Do not present Urcia as free cancellation. The brief wording does not fully explain operator cancellations, unsafe weather, illness, date changes, partial stays, payment fees or whether an exception applies to a particular payment. Request those terms before paying and keep the confirmation. This is not legal interpretation of how every dispute would be handled.
Practical traveler FAQs
Is the school in the same building as my room?
The operator describes a surf house near La Curvita and a separate school about ten minutes’ walk away. Exact street references are not independently reconciled here; obtain both the current check-in point and lesson meeting instructions.
How many lessons do I actually get?
Six-day camp: five 90-minute group lessons/five nights. Eleven-day: eight lessons/ten nights. Month Surf & Spanish: ten surf lessons/thirty nights plus its specified Spanish and video elements. None means two coached lessons every day.
Is advanced private coaching included?
Not in the base beginner/intermediate group formula. Private lessons and technical coaching are separate options; agree the instructor, goals, filming and price with Urcia.
How large are the groups?
The school states a maximum three people per instructor. Confirm ability matching and instruction language for your actual dates rather than treating an old guest review as a coach assignment.
Can I walk out and surf La Curvita by myself?
The house is described as nearby, but rocks, shorebreak and current vary with tide/swell. Agree the appropriate lesson section and independent-use rules; proximity is not a safety assessment.
What season should I choose?
The operator describes year-round surf, generally biggest June–September and warmer daytime weather December–April. Consider your skill and ask about actual conditions; a bigger-swell month is not automatically a better beginner trip.
Does a private bedroom have its own bathroom?
Not established. The house advertises shared bathrooms with hot showers. Confirm bathroom sharing, occupancy, locks and essential room facilities before upgrading.
Are meals, yoga and Spanish included?
Short camps list breakfast, yoga and Spanish as extras; water and tea are included at the house. The month contract includes ten Spanish lessons. No standard full-board plan is established.
Are the board, wetsuit and a Chicama trip included?
Board/wetsuit rental days are listed for each camp. Chicama transport/boat trips are separately arranged, not a standard camp inclusion. Confirm stock, damage terms and taking gear elsewhere.
Does the included caballito tour guarantee fishing and ceviche?
One tour is included, but the website sells several variants. Confirm which applies; the generic adventure description does not guarantee every activity, a catch or a meal for every camp.
Is TRU pickup free, and where does the driver meet me?
No free pickup is established. Taxi pickup is optional and its airport origin must be confirmed. Agree price, driver identification, meeting point, delays, luggage and the correct check-in destination.
What happens if I cancel?
Exact forms state 30% deposit,70% due on arrival and no refunds. Obtain written change/weather/operator-cancellation details; no exception or free-cancellation promise has been invented.
What remains uncertain after this research?
Independent street/check-in reconciliation, specific room amenities and access, live availability, actual session calendar, tour variant, gear/damage terms and detailed transfer/change/weather conditions. These are explicit limits, not substituted generic country advice.
