Peru Surf Camps: Regions, Seasons and Arrival Guide

Peru offers long left-hand points, surf-school towns and a dramatic desert coastline. Choose your region before booking: the warm far north and cooler Trujillo coast have different seasons and arrival logistics.

Choose your region

Huanchaco, near Trujillo, is a useful base for lessons and surf culture; Urcia offers board-and-wetsuit packages there. Chicama is a long-left destination for surfers who can already paddle, position and manage a point-break lineup. Máncora in the far north is warmer; Lobitos has a different mix of left points and exposed conditions. Lima is convenient for shorter trips around the international gateway. Ask a local coach about daily conditions rather than assuming every point suits learners.

Seasons and water temperature

April–October generally brings more consistent south/southwest swell to Chicama, Huanchaco and the central coast. November–March is a useful window for warmer far-north trips around Máncora and northern swells. These are broad patterns, not guarantees. The Humboldt Current makes the central coast much cooler than Máncora: ask your school what wetsuit thickness suits your dates. Urcia includes wetsuit use with its standard board-rental packages.

Airports and getting there

Lima (LIM) is a common international entry point. For Huanchaco and the Chicama region, Trujillo (TRU) is the useful onward gateway. For the far north, compare Piura and Talara and confirm the onward road transfer with your accommodation. Do not book Lima flights assuming the northern camps are a short taxi ride away.

From downtown Trujillo, Huanchaco is about half an hour by road according to Urcia’s local guide. Ask your camp to confirm its exact pickup point and fare. Published Urcia street addresses differ, so obtain the check-in address with your booking rather than relying on an unverified map pin.

Compare packages fairly

There is no reliable country-wide price band in the old directory data. Compare the total for your actual dates and room occupancy, not an old weekly figure. Ask whether the price includes board hire outside lessons, breakfast, other meals, video analysis and airport transport. A transfer to a surf spot is not the same as an airport pickup.

A useful quote should specify the number of nights and coached sessions. Guiding is not always a beginner lesson: Kima distinguishes the two, and novice surfers should confirm a structured course. Ask about meal plans and minimum stays before confirming your booking.

Who it suits — and who should choose carefully

A camp is useful if you want coaching and arrival logistics organised together. Independent, experienced surfers may prefer separate lodging and guiding. Beginners should prioritise coach attention and suitable daily conditions over a famous wave name. If you need flexible dates, check the arrival pattern before booking flights.

Practical preparation

Pack sun protection and a rash guard. For Peru’s cooler coast, arrange a suitable wetsuit; Sri Lanka operators generally say a full wetsuit is unnecessary. Reef sessions may call for footwear and extra care. Carry travel insurance covering surfing and confirm current government entry and travel guidance yourself. Never treat a camp’s marketing as a guarantee of personal safety.

Frequently asked questions

Which airport should I use?

TRU is useful for Huanchaco; Lima is a common international entry point. For the far north, compare Piura and Talara plus your onward transfer.

When should I book?

Choose your region and swell window first. April–October broadly favours the central/northern south-swell points; Máncora offers a warmer far-north option around November–March.

Are airport transfers included?

Not automatically. Get a written quote, pickup instructions and confirmation whether the rate is per person or per vehicle.

How much should I budget?

Use a current quote for your dates, nights and occupancy. Add flights, any airport transfer, meals not included, equipment charges and surfing-capable travel insurance.

Can a complete beginner join?

Choose a camp with structured beginner lessons and ask about group size, swimming requirements and daily spot selection. A guiding package alone is not necessarily a beginner course.
