The Endless Summer II (1994)


The Endless Summer II is a 1994 film directed by Bruce Brown and is a sequel to his 1966 film The Endless Summer. In The Endless Summer II, surfers Pat O’Connell and Robert “Wingnut” Weaver retrace the steps of Mike Hynson and Robert August.

Bruce Brown, king of surfing documentaries, returns after nearly thirty years to trace the steps of two young surfers to top surfing spots around the world. Along the way, we see many of the people and locales Bruce visited during the filming of Endless Summer (1966).

The Endless Summer II was generally well-received by critics. Rotten Tomatoes has a 93% audience score rating, based on 2,500+ reviews. However, it only has a 50% Tomatometer from 16 reviewers. IMDB has a 7.6/10 rating on 2,100+ reviews.

The film starts in California and then heads to Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti, South Africa, Ghana, Senegal, Spain (including the Canary Islands), France, Italy, Greece, Israel, India, and Indonesia.

Although the film mostly focuses on O’Connell and Weaver, there are also some great sequences featuring other surfers, including world champions Kelly Slater and Rob Machado.

In the scene when Wingnut steps in an Australian swamp and a crocodile jumps out and chases him in a shot where his face is not shown, mainly just his legs are shown, it was the legs of Steve Irwin who was holding Wingnut’s surfboard. the crocodile in the scene was Mary, and was filmed at Australia Zoo.
